He was born on 12 March 1931 in Stary S\u0105cz. He was the eldest son of J\u00f3zef and Weronika (family name: Chowaniec) who were teachers at the school in \u0141opuszna (their other sons\u2019 names were Marian and Kazimierz). In 1937 he started his education at the local school. When the Second World War broke out, the Tischner family had to move to Chab\u00f3wka, then to Raba Wy\u017cna, and in 1942 \u2013 to Rogo\u017anik. After the war, Tischner graduated from the junior high school in Nowy Targ. In 1949 he passed his finals at the Seweryn Goszczy\u0144ski (humanistic) secondary school in Nowy Targ. The same year J\u00f3zef Tischner started studying, first at the Faculty of Law of the Jagiellonian University (UJ), and then \u2013 as early as in May 1950 \u2013 he submitted documents to the Metropolitan Seminary in Krakow and moved from the Faculty of Law to the faculty of Theology. On 26 June 1955 he was ordained priest at the Wawel Cathedral by bishop Franciszek Jop. After ordination he continued his studies at the Faculty of Christian Philosophy of the Academy of Catholic Theology in Warsaw. In 1959 he obtained the master\u2019s degree at the Faculty of History and Philosophy of UJ, and then, under the supervision of prof. Roman Ingarden, he wrote the doctoral thesis entitled \u201cJa transcendentalne w filozofii E. Husserla\u201d [<em>The Transcendental I in the Philosophy of E.<\/em>&nbsp;<em>Husserl<\/em>]. After obtaining the doctor\u2019s degree in 1963, he became a lecturer at the Pontifical Faculty of Theology in Krakow. While preparing the dissertation \u201cJa aksjologiczne\u201d [<em>Axiological I<\/em>] for the postdoctoral degree, in the university year 1968\/69 he fulfilled his scientific scholarship in Louvain. In 1974 he obtained his postdoctoral degree. During the August strikes of 1980 Tischner was abroad. He came back to Poland in September as an associate professor to continue his work at the Pontifical Faculty of Theology and to give lectures on \u201cThe Philosophy of Human Tragedy\u201d at the National Academy of Theatre Arts in Krakow and at the Faculty of Philology of UJ. On 19 October 1980 he preached a famous sermon (\u201cSolidarno\u015b\u0107 sumie\u0144\u201d [<em>The Solidarity of Consciences<\/em>]) at the Wawel Cathedral to the leaders of the Independent and Self-Governing Trade Union \u201cSolidarity\u201d (NSZZ \u201cSolidarno\u015b\u0107\u201d), and in 1981 he published \u201cEtyka solidarno\u015bci\u201d [<em>The Ethics of Solidarity<\/em>]. In 1981 he became the first dean of the Faculty of Philosophy of the Pontifical Academy of Theology (PAT) in Krakow. Also, he was a co-founder (with Hans-George Gadamer and Krzysztof Michalski) and a president of the International Institute for Human Sciences in Vienna (1981). In 1997 he was re-elected to be the dean of the Faculty of Philosophy of PAT. Rev. prof. J\u00f3zef Tischner died in Krakow on 28 June 2000. To honour his scientific achievements, the University of \u0141\u00f3d\u017a (1995) and the Pedagogical University of Krakow (1996) granted him a honorary doctor\u2019s degree, and to honour his social merits Polish authorities awarded him with the Order of the White Eagle (1999).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1982 the following books by Tischner appeared: \u201cMy\u015blenie wed\u0142ug warto\u015bci\u201d [<em>Thinking According to Values<\/em>], \u201cPodstawy etyki \u2013 jak \u017cy\u0107?\u201d [<em>The Basics of Ethics \u2013 How to Live?<\/em>]. In 1984 \u201cEtyka warto\u015bci i nadziei\u201d [<em>The Ethics of Values and Hopes<\/em>] was published, and in 1985 \u2013 the collection of philosophical dissertations on human work: \u201cPolska jest Ojczyzn\u0105\u201d [<em>Poland is Homeland<\/em>]. He also published: the handbook \u201cFilozofia wsp\u00f3\u0142czesna\u201d [<em>Contemporary Philosophy<\/em>] (1989);&nbsp;<em>Das menschliche Drama: ph\u00e4nomenologische Studien zur Philosophie des Dramas<\/em>&nbsp;(Wilhelm Fink Verlag, 1989, Polish version \u2013 \u201cFilozofia dramatu\u201d [<em>The Philosophy of Drama<\/em>], 1990); a handbook for the philosophy of man: \u201cZarys filozofii cz\u0142owieka dla duszpasterzy i artyst\u00f3w\u201d [<em>The Outline of the Philosophy of Man for Priests and Artists<\/em>] (1991); the collection of essays \u201cPolski m\u0142yn\u201d [<em>The Polish Mill<\/em>] (1991); \u201cSpowied\u017a rewolucjonisty\u201d [<em>The Confession of a Revolutionist<\/em>] (1993), \u201cCzytaj\u0105c \u2018Fenomenologi\u0119 ducha\u2019 Hegla\u201d [<em>Reading Hegel\u2019s \u2018Phenomenology of Spirit\u2019<\/em>] (1993), \u201cNieszcz\u0119sny dar wolno\u015bci\u201d [<em>The Unfortunate Gift of Freedom<\/em>] (1993); \u201cMi\u0119dzy Panem a Plebanem. Rozmowy ks. Tischnera z J. \u017bakowskim i A. Michnikiem\u201d [<em>Between the Ruler and the Priest: Dialogues of Fr. Tischner with J. \u017bakowski and A. Michnik<\/em>] (1995); \u201cTischner czyta Katechizm\u201d [<em>Tischner Is Reading<\/em>&nbsp;<em>Catechism<\/em>] (1996); \u201cW krainie schorowanej wyobra\u017ani\u201d [<em>In the World of Sick Imagination<\/em>] (1997); \u201cSp\u00f3r o istnienie cz\u0142owieka\u201d [<em>The Dispute on the Existence of Man<\/em>] (1997); \u201cKsi\u0105dz na manowcach\u201d [<em>A Priest Going Astray<\/em>] (1999); \u201cPrzekona\u0107 Pana Boga\u201d [<em>To Convince God<\/em>] (1999).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>J\u00f3zef Tischner\u2019s main philosophical interests include anthropological, ethical, axiological and social issues within which he developed the problem of axiological \u201cI,\u201d meeting and dialogue, drama and freedom, as well as moral good and evil.
